The sun is already high in the sky; this first leg of the journey will not lead far. You continue the dirt road down to the junction where it meets the ridgeway road and as the sun is making its way down to the horizon you decide to set up camp in a clearing nearby.
You make a small fire and gather leaves and grasses to make a comfortable lining below your bedroll(if: $miiriJoined is 1)[s].(if: $miiriJoined is 1)[
Miiri asks, "Have you been up here before? Do you know what's up ahead? "
"I have traveled through here many times, yes," you answer, "The nearby junction is where the village meets the ridgeway road. To the south are The Silver Cliffs. When merchants come to town and they bring fish, that's where they got them from.
"Tomorrow we will turn north, however. This will eventually lead to River's End, though it is still far from here."
"I can't wait to see River's End, where the waters disappear," Miiri says, in between yawns, "They say it comes out the other end of the world before flowing back to us."
You nod, "I've only been there once before, when I was made Keeper. It is a beautiful place; a magical place."]
As the sun sets you prepare to go to sleep.

We have lived in these lands since the dawn of time. We have bled into these waters, and these waters have nourished us in return. Our ancestors lie buried beneath the very ground on which we stand, feeding the trees that keep us shaded from the burning sun. These lands are not only *where* we are but *who* we are, and so it always will be.
Our villages are scattered far and wide across this earth. Once, before the unification, we fought one another over petty disputes. There were seasons of war and bloodshed. Chieftains called upon their subjects to take up the spear and take the lives of their brethren.
But by the grace of the Mother, we were saved from these old ways of aggression and turmoil. Through her blessing, we found we are all the same; one people, united. Her wisdom guided us to form councils as equals, strengthening our bonds and bringing forth an age of peace.

"Haefut, wake up!" a familiar voice calls out to you, "Elder Aestel has called for you!"
You sit up in your cot, rubbing your eyes. Narrow rays of sunlight pierce through a few small holes in the sides of your tent. These will need fixing before the rain season comes.
Your littler sister Miiri barges into your tent excitedly, "Are you awake?"

"The sun has been up for so long! Were you up reading by the light of the candle again?" Miiri asks as she digs through your cot-side chest and produces your ceremonial tunic.
"I *am* the Keeper of The Word," you say, "It is my duty to read. And it is quiet after nightfall: no distractions to keep me from the words."
Miiri shrugs. "Elder Aestel has called for you. That sounds like a more important duty to me!" She throws you the tunic. "A messenger came in shortly before, and now you are called. I think it's something very important! Hurry!" She barges out of your tent.

You emerge from your tent and into the light of the hot sun. It initially looks to be a quiet day in town, but as you make your way over to the village circle it appears most townsfolk have gathered there.
Many turn towards you as you approach, some smiling and greeting you kindly, others whispering among themselves. Word of the messenger must have spread quickly.
"Blessings upon you, Keeper," someone calls from the crowd. You return the sentiment with a smile and a nod as you continue towards the Elder's tent.

Entering the tent, a number of individuals turn towards you. Elder Aestel is seated in his chair, surrounded by his servants, two members of the village guard, and a stranger who must be the messenger.
"Haefut, thank you for joining us," the Elder says, and gestures towards the stranger. "This is Ommal, messenger for The Unified Council. Ommal, this is Haefut, the Keeper of The Word."
You bow your head, "Blessings upon you, Ommal."
"And to you, Keeper," he says.
"Tell him what you told me," the Elder says to the messenger.
"Very well," Ommal says as he unrolls a fine textile scoll, "By decree of The Unified Council a Summoning has been called on the first day of harvesting at River's End. All of those and only those called in name are to attend without delay." He turns the scroll to you, exposing the gilded markings at the bottom of a long list of attendees, "Signed by the Grand Elder himself."
"That is one week from now," you say to the Elder, "About as long as the journey there. When do you leave?"
"Not I," the Elder says, "From our village only you have been called. In fact, few Elders are listed. I only recognize a few names, but these mostly appear to be specialized clerics such as yourself."

"I have told you all that I know, Keeper," he says, "You understand the limitations of my task."
"Of course, my apologies."
The Elder interrupts, "Thank you for this delivery, Ommal. With your duty to us fulfilled I grant you your dismissal. Should you need anything further of us, my servants will gladly oblige." He gestures towards the exit of the tent.
"Thank you, Elder," he says and bows before leaving, followed by one of the guards and one of the Elder's servants.
The Elder turns back to you, "I have made a steed available to you. You had best leave soon, arriving late to a Summoning is a tremendous dishonor. I will have the village informed."
"Of course, Elder. I will leave immediately."
"May your travels be safe, my young friend," he says with a kind smile, "I look forward to learning what this is all about upon your return."

"A Summoning has been announced and I must report to The Unified Council by the first day of harvesting," you say.
"An actual Summoning?! With all of the Elders in the realm?"
"No, the Council seems to have mostly called for clerics. I don't know what is going on, but I have to hurry if I am to make it in time. The Elder has allowed me use of one of his steeds."

On the next day, as your steed trots down the ridgeway, a bright light appears in the sky. It comes down overhead and and disappears behind the hillsides. A little while later, a loud thunderclap sends the birds flying from the nearby trees.

Continuing on, you notice the smoke clouds to the west eventually diminish. A wildfire down in the wet marshlands wouldn't have much of a chance to spread. But you do still wonder what the lightning and thunder could have been.
Later that day, a lone traveler approaches from up ahead. An old woman pulling a loaded market cart behind her.
"Did you see that lightning?" she asks you as she passes, "A thunderclap in good weather, fire in the marshes. An ill omen. Nothing good will come of this."
(if: $miiriJoined is 1)["Mother's blessings upon us all," Miiri says in return.](else:)["Strange things are afoot indeed," you say, "May The Mother bless you in your tavels."]

Ignoring your hesitations, you decide to investigate the source of the black smoke. Turning westward off the ridgeway road, you head down into the lower marshlands, careful to avoid the treacherous wet areas.
You lose sight of the smoke through the dense canopy overhead, but relying on your training and your sense of direction you are confident you are headed in the right direction. The brush grows thicker in places, but you can navigate your steed around these patches.(if: $miiriJoined is 1)[
"This place is creepy," Miiri says, "Is there any dangerous wildlife here?"

Eventually the smoke once again becomes apparent through the open patches in the canopy, soon followed the scent of things burning. The sounds of wildlife that were ever present before gradually die down the closer you get.
Pressing on, you hear the crackle of fire, but it is sparse. What seemed a singular source appears to be more widespread than you thought. Small fires are contained and dying down within these wetlands as you continue on. Your steed has grown nervous, so you decide to lead the animal on foot instead.
After a while, you hear sharp crackling of fire just beyond the next ridge. You guide (if: $miiriJoined is 1)[Miiri and ]the steed towards an opening between clusters of trees when suddenly a large silhoutte appears in front of you.
A tall figure twice your size steps into the light. They are dressed in a pure-white garb you have only seen used in ceremonial events before, their helmet a gleaming reflection of the surrounding marshlands. You are frozen in place.
The figure makes a gesture towards you. A greeting? A warning? It produces a strange sound, muffled by their peculiar helmet.
<span class="dialogue">[[ > Continue|c1n6a]]<span>
(display: "codexCheck")(display: "header")(set: $currentLocation to "c1n6a")
The figure appears to wait for you to move next. More of the strange sounds sound from behind them, but he raises his hand to silence them. It almost seems they feel threatened by you.
You bow your head as you would before an Elder. Your steed snorts nervously, so you tie her ropes to a tree and leave her behind momentarily.
The figure still waits, so you(if: $miiriJoined is 1)[ and Miiri] carefully approach. They side-step to give you space across the ridge, seemingly inviting you in.
The area ahead looks like a fire pit, though more of the tall figures are there blowing strange white smoke from a handheld aparatus over the fires, putting them out. The air is much hotter here. In the center of the pit lies a glowing orange rock, with two of the figures seemingly studing it from a short distance. They have black soot marks over their garb.
On the other end of the pit there is a strange building unlike anything you have ever seen. It is large, like the Elder's tent, but strangely curved and shiny like their helmets. You see more of the figures moving in and out of it across a ramp on its side.
One of the other figures exiting the building approaches, and communicates frantically with the one who allowed you access to the pit. Their tone is strange, seeming adversarial. After a while it appears to end in a stalemate.(if: $miiriJoined is 1)[

You approach the center of the pit, but the heat is tremendous and you can't get too close. The other figures there rise up from their crouched position and seem to want to keep you from approaching it further.
The first figure walks by you and gestures at you, and then at the strange building besides the pit. Perhaps to follow them into it?

The sun is making its way down below the nearby hilltops, leaving the marsh in a twilight befitting the strange sights you just witnessed. Navigating through the vegetation becomes difficult, and after a while you decide to set up camp on a dry patch.

You(if: $miiriJoined is 1)[ and Miiri] follow the tall figure up the ramp and into the structure. Inside it is smooth and equally strange. There are many shapes on the walls that give off light as if they were a torch or lamp, but you see no flame.
You arrive in a large chamber. At its center, on top of a circular table there is the strangest vision you have ever seen: it appears like a number of narrow rays of sunlight, but they move around in their own way, forming images.
The figure makes a sound, and the rays of light form a rock with an illuminated tail. The rock from the pit? It moves towards a smaller, rounder rock, that grows larger and larger. Then hills and valleys form on its surface, as if seen from the top of a mountain, and the rock falls to the ground in a large ball of flame. Then smoke.

Outside, back in the pit, the fires have all been put out. The rock itself is no longer orange, but black. The various figures that had been dousing the flames move past you, up the ramp and into the building.

"Grand Elder," proclaims one of the guards, "The Keeper of The Word."
The old, white-haired figure stands up slowly from his throne as the guards turn and leave through the same entrance, leaving you by yourself at the center of the circle. The crowd becomes silent.
"Welcome Keeper, I am glad to see you. You will play a central role at this Summoning. Kindly take your seat."
You bow your head and sit down, wondering what your role will be exactly.

"Almost two weeks ago a most peculiar event occured. A ship came down from the sky, settling on the ground a short way outside of River's Edge."
Quiet gasps and murmurring in the audience is quickly silenced by a gesture from the Grand Elder.
"Those aboard this sky ship are unlike any of us. They exited the ship as our men approached, and seemed friendly. However, they do not speak our tongue, and that is where you come in, Keeper.
"Guards," the Grand Elder exclaims, "Bring in the Outsider."
A tall figure is brought in, twice the height of anyone present here, and dressed in strange white garb. Their face looks similar to those of any person: two eyes, two ears, a nose and a mouth, but the proportions are strangely different.
The crowd explodes with commition, which takes the Grand Elder and the presence of several guards some time to settle down.
"Please," the Grand Elder says turning his attention to you, "As Keeper of The Word, you know all language and dialects. Speak with the Outside and translate their strange tongue."

The following day you are brought into a tent with the Outsider and two scribes who note down everything that happens.
After some time, through hand gestures, you begin to understand some of what they mean. They appear to indicate the rock in the marshes, how it came from the sky and fell to the ground. He slaps his hands together softly.
Then he gestures the same thing again, with his hands much wider, followed by a much louder clap of his hands. He points to the sky through the open window flap. It suddenly and shockingly makes sense.
In the next few hours you understand the Outsiders mean to bring the people aboard their sky ship. Or perhaps even more of their sky ships? You work out as much detail as you can, and bring your findings to the Grand Elder and the Unified Council.
"A giant rock in the sky?" he asks, "One that will destroy everything? How is this possible?"
"This I don't know, but the Outsiders aim to help us, to protect us. I don't know where they wish to take us, but we must gather everyone, and anything of importance that we can bring."

People are panicking in the streets, guards are yelling that River's Edge is under attack
"The Outsiders have played a trick on us!" someone yells.
A group of guards lays siege to the sky ship, firing arrows and slinging rocks to no avail. Then the entrance on its side opens and the ramp comes down. Outsiders wearing helmets and holding strange objects in their hands come running out. Suddenly, rays of sunlight appear from the objects they are holding, tearing right through the guards. One of the guards is torn in half as if by a giant blade, others fall dead to the ground with holes in their chest.
You and a number of other clerics escape to the far end of town in panic. None of the outsiders appear to come your way, and after only a few minutes that feel like an eternity, the sky ship rises up into the sky as before, with the others following in the distance. they climb higher and higher until the disappear.

"My pennance was assigned to me by the Grand Elder, you have no power to forfeit anything."
"Yes, *obviously*, but if we make strides in understanding these awful Outsiders, *boons* will be granted. Any request I make will be considered, you understand?"
You consider the offer. Pennance aside, these Outsiders are here for some strange reason and we must try and understand what is going on. On the other hand, this requires trusting Kharzo to some extent, which will not end well. But there is a greater good to consider.

"Where will we go?" she asks.
"We will go with the Outsiders, but where? I don't fully understand what they mean by their destination."
One of the Outsiders enters the chamber. He gestures to remain calm, but the time is now.
You look out the window and see a streak of light shoot through the sky as the sky ship smoothly moves upward. It comes down in the distance, producing a ball of flame. The ship continues to rise higher and higher, River's Edge shrinking ever smaller below.
More streaks of light can be seen, impacting the earth below. Soon you can't even make out River's Edge anymore, as even valleys and hillsides become too small to see. Hundreds of streaks of light shoot by below, as the rounded edge of the world falls away more and more, and you seemingly leave the daytime behind and join the stars in the night sky.
One enormous light can be seen amidst thousands of other tiny specks, headed towards the now small blue circle that you just came from. This was your home? Flashes of light sparkle over the surface, until the large streak makes contact, creating a giant flash the size of the earth itself.
You and Miiri hold one another, staring fascinated at the incomprehensible sight far below you. The Outsider makes a noise you do not understand. Then all the stars in the night sky suddenly become streaks themselves and the earth is gone.
You turn to the Outsider. He makes two very simple gestures: Going. Home.

You are awoken by Kharzo making his way into the tent.
Continuing where you left off, you try and speak with the Outsider using hand gestures. You think you understand they have come here with a warning of some kind of great catastrophe. Something about what happened in the marshlands, but also different.
You explain this to Kharzo, whose frustrated experession turns excited.
"Excellent, I will inform the Grand Elder immediately," he says, "And trust me, I will put in a good word for you."
He and the Outsider exit the tent, leaving you by yourself once more.

The next day no one comes to you, nor the day after that. Kharzo clearly hasn't made any effort to reduce your pennance.
One of thenext days you hear strange noises outside. People are clearly moving around in the streets more than before. There seems to be a nervousness in the air, but you can't figure out anything specific.
A few days later, late at night, two guards come to escort you out of the pennance tent, but they do not take you to The Unfified Council, instead bringing you to an Outsider's building like you had seen in the marshes. This one stands inexplicably in the middle of River's Edge.
You are escorted up its ramp, and into the strange-looking interior of the building. You are dropped off at small chamber inside the structure, a small round window overlooking River's Edge.
"My apologies, Keeper," Kharzo says, appearing in the doorway behind you, "I couldn't find the time to put in a good word for you, but I arranged these accomodations."
He smirks, and some kind of heavy door closes quickly, leaving you by yourself entirely.

Hours pass, and the hustle and bustle outside eventually turns quiet.
Then suddenly a streak of light shoots through the sky exactly like in the marshlands. Gazing out the window, you almost miss how the building you are in seems to moves upward. The streak of light comes down in the distance, producing a ball of flame. In the meantime, the structure continues to rise higher and higher, River's Edge shrinking ever smaller below.
You stare fascinated at the incomprehensible sight far below you. Then all the stars in the night sky suddenly become streaks themselves and the earth is gone.
Miiri... Is she still down there, or perhaps somewhere nearby? How could you even begin to find out?
